I recently had a lengthy email exchange with a writing friend who asked me if I had any tips or suggestions regarding preorder campaigns, and I realized this information might be useful to a lot of writers. So here I am, sharing what I’ve learned after running several preorder campaigns of my own. Please keep in mind that there are many ways to run these campaigns. These are simply my suggestions, based on what has worked for me. What is a preorder campaign? It’s basically an incentivized call to action, encouraging readers to preorder your book before it comes out. If they do, they then submit certain info to you (the author), and you reward them with various goodies—swag, bonus digital content, maybe even a big-ticket item. (more on this later) Do preorder campaigns work? Are they worthwhile? Yes, they work, in the sense that they encourage people to preorder your book and earn you a few sales. Are they worthwhile? I’m not sure. The truth of the matter is that... Read More
Today I am so excited to share some incredible news that I’ve been sitting on since April. Yes, that’s right, April. I’ve been dying to talk about this for the past eight months and now I finally can… I’m writing a sci-fi duology with HarperTeen! Text version of the above image for accessibility: Erica Sussman at HarperTeen has acquired Erin Bowman’s YA sci-fi duology, consisting of Contagion and its untitled sequel, about two teens working internships for a drilling conglomerate who are coerced into investigating a distress call from a research crew lightyears away, and about the sole survivor they find when landing on the supposedly uninhabitable planet. Pitched as Alien meets The Thing, the novels are scheduled for spring 2018 and spring 2019; Sara Crowe at Pippin Properties negotiated the deal for North American rights, while at Harvey Klinger, Inc. !!!! I’m so excited to be working with Erica and the HarperTeen gang again. They did such a fantastic job with the Taken trilogy... Read More

How did that happen? It feels like just a year ago that the idea for the Taken series fell into my lap, but that was actually way back in 2009. Time flies. To celebrate, and to thank all you hard-working book bloggers/reviewers, I’m hosting a giveaway. Here’s what’s up for grabs: » One (1) winner will receive a signed copy of the complete Taken trilogy (in paperback), plus a copy of Stolen (the companion e-novella) » Three (3) winners will receive an e-copy of Stolen! Entering is easy: All you have to do is post a review for one of my books on a retail site—Amazon, B&N, BAM, any online store where you can submit a review on the book detail page. You can review any book/novella I’ve written, from Taken to Vengeance Road. Each posted review gains you one (1) entry, but the review must be one of substance. This does not mean that it has to be long, just that “I like/hate this book” won’t qualify. Shoot for a few sentences and please explain why you liked ... Read More
Howdy, y’all. I’m stepping away from the drafting cave to share some incredible news… Vengeance Road is getting a companion—Retribution Rails! In case that image doesn’t display properly, it says: Erin Bowman’s RETRIBUTION RAILS, a companion novel to VENGEANCE ROAD, set in 1887 Arizona and about a boy in possession of a mysterious gold coin who is forcibly recruited by a train-robbing gang interested in the piece, and about the aspiring female journalist who will either be his ticket to freedom—or a noose, again to Kate O’Sullivan at HMH, by Sara Crowe at Harvey Klinger. Yeehaw! I’m super excited to be working with Kate and the HMH gang again and I’m beyond thrilled to be writing another western. That said, I’m sure you have some questions… You say ‘companion.’ Does that mean RR is a sequel? Nope! This is a completely separate story, with a new plot and new characters. It’s still set in Arizona (roughly... Read More
